english

fallingwild is a project of the Berlin art&design collective Labor k3000. The title of the project refers to Frank Loyd Wright’s famous Fallingwater architecture, an icon of modernism that placed itself in the natural environment like a drop sculpture from which one could observe a spectacular nature. The architecture of modernism, as an anthropocentric dwelling, as a human culture, was set in radical opposition to other species. The project fallingwild addresses the relationship between architecture and nature differently: How will design processes transform if we consider habitats of various species as entangled with our practice and if we understand non-human animals as space producers and urban actors.

The starting point of the project is the
Haus A of the Haus der Statistik at Alexanderplatz and related considerations
on questions of former forms of displacement and its future use. Our focus is on the façade, which has been
used as a nesting site by over 200 pairs of swifts for several years. The
high-modern concrete building, which was developed with the application of a
modular system, played a central role in the history of the GDR and the protests
of the dissidents in 1989. A building that has become the habitat of
various residents since its closure. The open joints and not completely
sealed connections of its prefabricated façade offer ideal conditions for birds
that return every year to build their nests here. Alexanderplatz has long been
inhabited by foxes, starlings, sparrows, crows, doves, raccoons, bats, swifts
and many others who use our urban infrastructure.

Studies of animals in the city have shown that there are different reasons for the migration of wild animals to city. Many animals lose their habitat in the monocultures of industrialized agriculture or are not hunted in the city. The food and habitat supply in a city like Berlin is also particularly diverse, which is not due to filled garbage cans, but to parks, gardens, wastelands, abandoned building ruins and construction sites, to the numerous snack stands and not least to the city architecture itself. An ultra-modern prefabricated façade, such as the one at the Haus der Statistik, is also an ideal nesting place for various building breeders. Due to its differentiated spatial diversity and the most diverse historical architectural phases and building types, the city has also become an ideal place for animal residents. New forms of coexistence and interspecies relationships have already become reality.

But through ordinances and laws for the protection of species, a new hierarchy of attention and spatial planning has also developed, which fights the feral pigeon and protects the great titmice. With the current legal situation, a specific spatial discourse of a “right” or “wrong” nature is introduced. Bureaucratically and creatively administered an anthropocentric species order is becoming spatialized. On the other hand, a fundamental and inclusive notion of non-human animals as space producers and city actors hardly receives any attention in the architectural and urban discourse.

With fallingwild and the model facade in front of the House of Statistics, we propose to commonly design the urban interspecies space together with nonhuman animals.
